Dairy Queen – is there any dairy in it?

Eldest daughter had braces put on her teeth this week and because of this she’s had a very sore mouth. I was advised by the orthodontist, as well as all my friends who have kids who’ve been through this before, to put her on some sort of pain medicine.

On Monday before the braces were actually even put on I was trolling through my medicine cabinet to see what I could give her. After reading a few bottles I quickly realized that if I was to give my eldest the proper dose of children’s bubble gum flavored Tylenol (our families preferred pain medicine) she’d be drinking about three quarters of a cup of the stuff. It was time I decided, to move her up to the adult dosage of Tylenol.

Before we went to the orthodontists I took the preventative measure of trying to get one of the Tylenol ‘easy swallow’ capsules down her throat. She gagged and couldn’t get it down. Great.

I then tried crushing the pills up with a spoon and mixing them in a single serving size chocolate pudding. She got it down but she complained the whole time.

The afternoon after she had her braces put on she was miserable. I knew that she needed more pain medicine so this time I packed everyone up and took all the kids to Dairy Queen. I mixed the pills this time into a chocolate chip cookie dough ‘Blizzard’. Success! I had no complaints from any one about this pharmaceutical event.

We have repeated this visit every night since. Four nights running now I’ve gone through the Dairy Queen drive-thru and congratulated myself on being a great mother because the pain medicine is going down so nicely.

A few minutes ago however my daughter came to me before going up to bed and asked if she could take another Tylenol. She had played her trumpet for music class today and now her teeth were bothering her again.

"Sure, " I said, "but I’m not driving you to DQ at this time of the night."

"That’s okay," she replied and went into the kitchen and gulped down the pills with a glass of milk. No gagging , no complaints, no problems.

I’ve been had.

I’ve also gained five pounds this week.

  1. That was a tasty idea to get her to take her meds. The BoyChild started taking pills just before he turned 5. He HATES most of the liquid meds and we gave him the option of swallowing the pill form and he took us up on it. The GirlChild on the other had was probably 11 before she could swallow a pill reliably.

  3. I was still gagging on pills as a grown-up and pregnant, trying to take those prenatal vitamins.
But, boy, the other kids must have enjoyed Sis’s braces! I can hear them now: “Cry some more, Sis; she’ll take us to DQ again.”
